BHAKTAPUR, NEPAL

Bhaktapur is a semi-urban community eight miles away from Kathmandu of approximately 80,000 inhabitants who are predominantly of Newar ethnicity. Agriculture is an important component of the majority of livelihoods among residents of the Bhaktapur municipality.  Our Bhaktapur field site is located within the Public Health Care Center, Kwopa Poly-technic Institute at Chyamasingh. This municipality-run hospital offers accessible, low cost community-based care to its residents. The Institute is the site for nursing and paramedic courses, 25 in-patient hospital beds, a government-run urban clinic and a popular out-patient clinic with visiting physicians. The center is also the coordinating site for the FCHVs in Bhaktapur. This is a new field site for our team and we are excited to begin a research collaboration with the Institute of Medicine at Tribhuvan University and University College of London. Our study site is supported by the U.K. Medical Research Council.

Since 1988, Nepal has had a great success in the implementation of a Female Community Health Volunteer (FCHV) program, which promotes community-based healthcare and health education. There are currently around 90 FCHVs working within Bhaktapur. We hope to utilize and build upon the existing FCHV program for chronic disease management research in order to strengthen the health care delivery system for non-communicable diseases, which are priority areas for the Government of Nepal.
